To be able to fish legally in the Boston area, you need the proper fishing license. There are different licences for saltwater and freshwater fishing.
Saltwater Fishing Licence
A saltwater fishing licence is required for persons 16 or older. You do not need a licence when you go fishing on a permitted charter boat. The cost of the licence is $10 a year, depending on the type of license. The licence is free if you are 65 or older. All permitted MA residents will be able to fish in the three neighbouring coastal states (NH, RI, and CT) Permitted fishermen from these three neighbouring coastal states will also be able to fish in Massachusetts waters. If you are disabled, no licence is required.
